This study is about Teachers' Motivation and Attitude towards Teaching Writing Skill. It
attempted to find out the Mechara and Gelemso Senior Secondary and preparatory schools
English language teachers' motivation and attitudes towards teaching English language writing
skill. It also set out to investigate the factors affecting the teachers' motivation and attitude
towards teaching writing skill. A questionnaire that consisted of 27 items was distributed to 21
English language teachers in two governmental senior secondary and Preparatory schools that
are found in West Haraghee Zone Oromiya Region. The questionnaire was primarily designed
for collecting data about teachers' motivation and attitudes and the factors affecting their
motivation and attitude towards teaching writing skill. For in-depth scrutiny of the problems
teachers' teaching of writing skill, ten teachers (five English language teachers from each school)
were interviewed. The collected data was analyzed through percentages and frequency values.
The findings indicated that the majority of the English language teachers had high motivation
and generally, mildly favorable (positive) attitudes towards teaching English writing skill.
However, a considerable number of the English language teachers were found to have low
motivation and unfavorable attitude towards teaching writing skill. Though the results indicate,
\ the majority of the English language teachers had high motivation and generally, mildly
favorable (positive) attitudes towards teaching English writing skill, the teaching of writing skill
can be more effective if all the English language teachers have high motivation and strong
attitude towards it Therefore, teachers' motivation, attitudes, and factors affecting the teachers'
motivation and �ttitudes should be taken into account by Ministry of Education, syllabus
designers, Education office officers at different levels , the school managers, unit leaders and
Department Heads and other concerned bodies. |
