Abstract:
Students’ motivation in reading skills is assumed to be affected by their perception of motivational
techniques the teachers utilize. The perception can also be influenced by the motivationin learning
reading skills. Therefore, this study aims to explore the students’ perception of their teachers’
motivational techniques in teaching reading skills at Bati Red Cross “77” Senior Secondary and
Preparatory school.
The study used quantitative and qualitative research approaches to investigate the issue. To collect
the required data for this study, questionnaire, and interview and class room observation were used
as instrument. The questionnaire and interview were mainly dapted from Chang and Dornyie(2007)
and the classroom observation adapted from Dornyie (2001) and Chang and Dornyie(2007).The
questionnaire was divided in to three sections such asthe types of motivational techniques utilized
teaching reading skills, students’ perception of teachers’ motivational techniques and the frequency
of the motivational techniques used by teachers.
The findings of this study indicate that the students do not seem to perceive that the motivational
techniques used by their teachers help to promote their motivation for learning reading skills
although teachershave assumed that they used motivational techniques as thee responded in the
interview.Moreover, with regard to the participants’ responses, the results of classroom observation
show, consequently, the researcher recommended measures to be taken to increase students’
engagement and success in reading skills through motivational techniques.
