Abstract:
Reclaimed Asphalt pavement is the term for removing and reprocessing pavement materials containing Bitumen and aggregate. The Recycling of asphalt has become a common practice in the transportation industry. Motivation for Recycling typically includes environmental, economic, and social benefits. The use of reclaimed asphalt pavement in roadway Construction fits with the global objective of Sustainable development through the prudent use of natural resources.
Reclaimed asphalt pavement recycling activities address reducing the use of declining virgin aggregate sources and material storage and disposal of reclaimed asphalt material from paving projects. Further, Energy Savings can be realized with reclaimed asphalt pavement in roadway construction, reducing the process of virgin aggregate materials. Others include faster project completion and reduced construction-related traffic, resulting in less travel disruption.
In our Country (Ethiopia), road construction and maintenance works are commonly practiced to deliver the required road services for its end users. But due to the scarcity of resources, environmental pollution, and economic reasons in the country, the road construction and maintenance works will have to start to reuse the reusable old asphalt pavement materials produced from road rehabilitation and maintenance works. The process of reusing reusable old asphalt pavement materials is known as RAP. Reusing RAP materials for a newly produced recycled Base Course Layer was a relatively new idea for countries like Ethiopia. However, some countries benefit much more today by incorporating a portion of RAP materials in the newly designed recycled Base Course Layer.
Though, the detailed study of a newly designed recycled material for the Base Course Layer that incorporates 25% of RAP materials was blending the primary intention of this study. To attain the study's objectives, a laboratory-based on ERA Technical Specification for maintenance work 2003 designing programs were conducted and produced a blending of trial 5, 10,15,20,25, and 30 percent of RAP materials with virgin aggregate. The laboratory experimental test results prepared analysis data for each blending ratio.
