Abstract:
Grade 10 students’ national exam performance is an area of great concern to all stakeholders in education nationwide. The statistical data shows Secondary schools in Kamba woreda achieved poor result in EGSECE in the last three consecutive years. This study was undertaken to identify factors related with teachers, students, parents, school principals and the school facilities. Simple random sampling was employed in selecting 179 students out of 1451 who took national exam in 2010 E.C. whom obtained in Kamba preparatory School, Technical and Vocational College and their living communities. 14 teachers who are teaching grade 10 students in seven secondary schools, 3 principals, 7 parents and 7 tenth complete and unemployed youth were purposively chosen to be interviewed. In this study the questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, document analysis and observation approaches were used. The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, and two way ANOVA was used and qualitative data was narrated. Regression and the mean value were computed to see the relationship and effects of the variables. The data was by using SPSS software version 20 when teachers’ active teaching method and quality, library and laboratory p value< 0.05 statistically significant. The finding reveals qualification problems of teachers, wastage of instructional time and applying old teaching method/approach were problems revealed teachers. Habitual truancy, time utilization problems, poor students’ discipline were students related factors. Background, education and income of parents, low level of parents’ involvement in education issues, ineffective leadership of school principals and lack of availability of school facilities were the major factors to have been affecting the secondary school students’ academic performances in Kamba woreda secondary schools. Based on the findings and conclusion, giving emphasis to teachers qualification, both teachers and students should properly use the time, campaign for public awareness in education, parents should be actively involved in encouraging pupils to learn and also in supervising pupil’s academic work at home, principals should work in line with their duties and responsibilities given to them by the policy and parents, guardians and other educational stakeholders such as NGO’s should provide learning materials to the schools were suggested as recommendations.
