dc.description.abstract The main objective of this study is to investigate the challenges and prospects of integrated livestock with smallholder’s crop production in Anlemo woreda, Southern Ethiopia. The study area was selected purposively and the data from 285 sample households were collected in the three rural kebeles, which were selected by considering agro-ecological zones, from each agro-ecological zone, the kebeles were selected by using stratified random sampling method. Survey was conducted to collect primary data that were gathered by using structured household questionnaire, focus group discussions, and key informant interview and field observations. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the farming in terms of their socio-economic and demographic back ground,. The role of crops in the integrated farming was source of feed for livestock, medicinal, utilization of resources and reducing the risk and environmental safety. The roles of livestock for crop production also for draft, manure, and environmental safety and reduce risk of losing. Farmers realizing the benefits from integrated livestock-crop production system, so as to integration of livestock for purposes of improving soil fertility, for sustainable crop productivity among smallholder farmers. Such sustainable integrated production of crops and livestock was envisaged to improve productivity of crops and animal products that can easily tap into organic production. A clear evidence of wide spread interest to experience the practice with strong positive perception. Constraints to integrating crops and livestock include the competition for resources, especially land, managing two types of farming on the same farm was perceived as difficulty and low Extension services. The farmers were facing challenges in practicing; Infrastructural development, research and improving farmer’s education are suggested strategies that might support smallholders’ integrated livestock-crops production. en_US
