FACTORS AFFECTING IMPLEMENTATION OF CARBON PROJECT IN HUMBO WOREDA: THE CASE OF WOLAITA ZONE, SOUTHERN ETHIOPIA.

Abstract

The average temperature in the study area was increasing mainly due to man produced factors, in particular, carbon dioxide emission. As Wild(2003),stated that carbon dioxides the most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. The general objective of this study was to assess the factors affecting the practices of carbon projects in selected rural kebeles which were incorporated in carbon projects in Humbo Woreda, Wolayta zone,Southern Ethiopia. The study used descriptive research design. Out of total kebeles which were incorporated in the project of carbon in Humbo woreda, four kebels were selected and from the total household heads 160 (5%) were determined as sample size. The respondents’ selection was carried out using systematic random and purposive sampling techniques. The information obtained was then analyzed by using descriptive analysis method. The major findings revealed that, there was lack of active community participation on the development of carbon project. In addition, there was lack of training on forest protection and management. Therefore, the zone departments of the natural resource management should encourage active community participation and create awareness on the implementation of carbon project. The responsible body should also provide technical support on forest management and protection to the cooperative societies; and those bodies who had the responsibilities to run carbon projects in the respective rural kebeles, should create a suitable conditions for the equal participation of both men and women on the implementation of the project.
