Theeconomyo fEthiopiadependsonrain-fedagriculture,whichishighlysensitiveto
seasonalandinterannualvariationso frainfall .Adequateamounto frainfal lisrequired
everyyearforadequateagriculturalproductionanddrinkingwater.Therefore,the
distributiono fseasonalrainfal li nspaceandtim eiscriticaltothecountry'seconomy.
Droughthasgreatinfluenceonthesocio-economicaspectandlivelihoo do ftherural
population.Droughtoccursi nEthiopiaduetoanomalousregionalatmosphericcirculation.
Thisstudyfocusesonthesummerrain yseasono fJune,July,AugustandSeptember(JJAS,
hereafterkiremt).I texaminesatmosphericandoceanographiccirculationpatterns
associatedt okiremtrainfal lanomalies.
Theinvestigatio nmainlyconcentratesonwetanddryyearsthatoccurredoverEthiopia
duringtherainyseasons(JunetoSeptember)o f1970-2004.Monthlytota lRainfalldata
obtainedfro mNationalMeteorologicalAgency(NMA )wasusedtodeterminethe
characteristicso fwetanddryyears.Finally,NCEP-NCARreanalysisclimatedatawas
use dtoanalyzetheatmosphericcirculationassociatedwithwetanddryyears.
Itha sbeenfoundthatthepatterno ftheSSTalongtheeasternPacificandtheIndia noceans
see mtoinfluencetheoccurrenceo ftheanomalyrainfal lyears.Correlationanalysisshows
tha tEthiopiansummerrainfal lismorestronglycorrelatedwiththeeasternPacificand
IndianOceansSST.Thus,thedroughtrecordsi nEthiopiaaremainlyassociatedwith
