Rainfallvariabilityanalysiswasconductedi nEasternAmharaRegion,whichisoneo f
themostdrought-hitregionso fEthiopia.Onthisregions ofarnoattempthasbeen
undertakentoanalyzethespatialandtemporalvariabilityo frainfalli nrelationwith
evapotranspiration.Toconducttheanalysis,rainfallcanbedirectlymeasured,whereas
evapotranspirationisestimatedfromweatherdatausingFAOPenman-Monteithmethod
forfirstclassstationsandusingThomthwaitemethodwheretheavailabilityo fdatais
limited .
Theinterannualpatternanalysiso fmonthlyrainfalldistributionwereplotted&markedto
definetheseason swelloverthestudyarea.Temporalvariationo fannualrainfallwas
analyzedusingvariabilityindicesandstaticalparameters.Investigationo fseasonaland
annualrainfallvariabilityusingdifferentmethodsrevealsthatthereisspatialvariabilityo f
rainfalli nthestudyarea.Spatialanalysisshowedthattheentireregioncanbeclassified
intothreehomogeaeouszonesdependingupontheirmoistureavailabilityindex.
Monthlyrainfallandevapotranspirationwereplottedandcomparedi nordertodetemiine
moisturedeficitperiodsforseveralstationsi nthestudyareaandresultsshowedthatthe
variabilityo fETo'relativelytorainfallwaslo wwithtimewhileyear-to-yearrainfall
variabilitywasveryhigh.Similarlythespatialintegrationo fpointrainfallshowedhigh
variabilitythanETQ.
Randommodelsthatestimateseasonal&annualrainfalla safunctiono fprobabilityand
probabledailyextremerainfallsa safunctiono freturnperiodsaredefined.
Theagro-climatezonationo fthemeteorologicalstationwasdeterminedusingUNESCO
aridityindex(AI) .A naridityindex(A.I )isanumericalindicatoro fthedegreeo fdryness
o ftheclimateatagivenlocation.Thisindicatorservestoidentify,locateordelimit
regionsthatsufferfromadeficito fwater. |
