Abstract:
Back ground: Hyperglycemia is pathologic condition by which individuals blood
glucose level is above normal range and it could be either Prediabetes or diabetes. Family
members of type II diabetes patient are considered as more likely to develop
hyperglycemia due to environmental and genetic factors.
Objective: To assess the prevalence of hyperglycemia and associated factors among the
family member of Type II Diabetic patients in Arba Minch Town.
Method: Community-based Cross-sectional study design was from June 1 to July 30,
2022 GC. Face-to-face interviews, Fasting blood Sugar and anthropometric
measurements were used. All age group were involved by Simple random sampling
method in the study. Descriptive statistics and binomial logistic regression were used to
assess the prevalence and to determine associated factors.
Result. Total study participants were (n=337) which is 96.3% response rate. Among
study participants 186(55.2%) were female. The mean age of study participant was
(x=26.66±17.5). The mean value fasting glucose was 82.59mg/dl±14.16. Overall
prevalence of hyperglycemia was 14.54%. Age, family relation with diabetes mellitus
patients (being spouse), educational status, waist to hip ratio and waist to height ratio
was found significantly associated (p value < 0.05) with Hyperglycemia among family
members of diabetic Mellitus.
Conclusion: High prevalence of hyperglycemia was identified among family members
of diabetes mellitus in the study area. Thus immediate interventional action should be
considered among family member of diabetic patients. In addition health education and
health promotion should include the family members of diabetic patients in order to
prevent health impact of hyperglycemi
