Abstract:
Introduction: Women with a history of abortion are at higher risk of developing another
unintended pregnancy, which may lead to repeated abortions and life-threatening complications.
The unmet need for family planning is high among post-abortion care clients. In Ethiopia, many
women leave health facilities without using family planning methods, and they do not get their
choice. Information regarding post-abortion contraception uptake and choice determinants is
limited in the study area.
Objective: To assess post-abortion family planning uptake and associated factors among women
receiving abortion care at Arba Minch town health facility, Gamo Zone, Southern Ethiopia,
2024G.C.
Method: A cross-sectional study was employed from September to December 2023 G.C. at a
health facility found in Arba Minch town, Gamo zone, SNNPR, Ethiopia. A total of 372 study
participants were recruited. Data was collected using the KOBO tool app and structured
questionnaires. SPSS window version 25.0 was used for data analysis. Variables with a p-value <
0.25 in bivariate logistic regression were candidates for multivariate logistic regression. Statistical
significance was declared at a P-value less than 0.05.
Result: The magnitude of post-abortion family planning uptake was 65.9%. Age (AOR, 4.539;
95% CI, 1.20–17.163), previous modern family planning counseling (AOR, 2.740; 95% CI,
1.037–7.239), previous contraceptive usage (AOR, 6.642; 95% CI, 2.33–18.910), education level
(AOR, 0.082; 95% CI, 0.011–0.608), marital status (AOR, 0.29; 95% CI, 0.114–0.734), time plan
to get pregnant (AOR, 0.107; 95% CI, 0.032–0.361), type of abortion service (AOR, 0.114; 95%
CI, 0.027–0.476), type of health facility (AOR, 0.271; 95% CI, 0.085–0.859), and pregnancy
intention (AOR, 0.103; 95% CI, 0.022–0.485), had significantly associated with post abortion
contraceptive uptake.
Conclusion: The magnitude of post-abortion contraceptive uptake was low compared to the
national figure. Age, educational level, marital status, history of counseling on modern family
planning), previous contraceptive usage, type of service, type of health facility, time plan to get
pregnant, and pregnancy intention were significantly associated with post-abortion contraception
uptake.
