Abstract:
Background: A transvaginal sonography (TVS) is an ultrasound procedure that uses a probe
inserted into the vagina to examine the female pelvic cavity and organs. It is essential for
diagnosing early gynecological issues and monitoring early-stage pregnancies that are
challenging to assess with transabdominal ultrasound. However, there is a challenge in usage
of TVS due to lack of acceptance and awareness. This might cause delays in gynecological
problem diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, this study aims to assess acceptability and
associated factors to undergo transvaginal examination among women attending public
hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 2024.
Methods and materials: Facility based cross sectional study was conducted. A systematic
random sampling technique was applied for selecting study participants. Accordingly, 382
women were included in the study. After the data collected by kobo toolbox, it was downloaded
as excel file and exported to SPSS version 26. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression
was used to identify statically significant association between dependent and independent
variables. The odds ratio at 95% confidence interval with p value of 0.05% was considered
statically significant.
Result: Acceptability of women to undergo transvaginal ultrasound examination was 35.1%
(95%CI: 30.3%-40.1%). For acceptability in age above 50 years AOR= (0.23,95%CI: 0.05
0.95), primary education AOR= (5.03, 95%CI: 1.70-14.90), secondary education AOR= (4.38,
95%CI: 1.52-12.58), previous TVS experience AOR= (10.35, 95%CI:3.03-35.28), pelvic
organ injury AOR= (2.34, 95%CI:1.18-4.62), positive attitude AOR=(2.80,95%CI:1.59
4.92)and awareness on TVS AOR (3.92, 95%CI: 1.97-7.82) was Significantly associated
factors of acceptability to have TVS. Conclusion and Recommendation: In this study
acceptability of the women to undergo TVS were low. awareness, attitude, pelvic organ injury,
previous experience, education and age of the women was strongly determined the
acceptability. Therefore, Addis Ababa Health Bureau and health professionals should
disseminate and aware women on transvaginal examination.
