Abstract:
The Objective of this study was to explore the underlying Cause and Consequence of the
conflicts in Segen Zuryia woreda of Konso Zone. Methodologically, the researcher employed
qualitative research approach and Descriptive survey research design which relied on primary
and secondary sources of data. The tools used to collect data were interviews,
observation, Focus Group Discussion and document analysis. Purposive sampling, a type of
non-probability sampling was also used to select the participants for in-depth interview and
Focus Group Discussion. Thus, findings of the study have revealed the fundamental cause of the
conflict on the study area is that the disagreement created between the kebeles surrounding
Segen /Gumayde/on the quest of Konso for Zonal administration; the government does not made
any public consultation with the concerned surrounding people on the dissolution the Segen
Area Peoples Zone, the quest of Gumayde special woreda and the political power sharing and
representation are the major cause s of the conflict. Moreover, the study revealed the impacts of
the conflict as; political, economic, and social. The finding also revealed that, the attempt was
made to resolve the conflict in study area by regional, zone, local and stake holders. However,
the attempts failed to address the root causes of the conflict and build lasting peace. Thus, as the
finding of this study indicated, in the study area there are still violent and destructive as before.
The study also revealed that, perpetrators of the attacks have killed several people in a gruesome
and cruel manner and injured many others; houses, farms, harvests and other property in many
kebeles have been partially burned or completely razed to the ground. .The conflicts have caused
a large-scale humanitarian crisis. Therefore, the regional, Zone and Woreda government should
provide funding support for the renovation of the damaged property and rehabilitation of the
displaced people, Corrective measures also need to be taken after the appropriate investigation
into officials within government structures
