Factor that Affects Female Students participation during Physical Education Practical Class:
With Specific Reference to Arbaminch City Administration Gamo Zone

The purpose of this study wasidentifying participation Factor that Affects Female Students
participation during Physical Education Practical Classand suggesting possible solution
atArbaminch City Administration.Sample of this study was 76 grade nine female students, 6 PE
teachers and 15parent committee at selected secondary school.Descriptive survey design was
implemented includingbothqualitative and quantitative method of data collection. Selfadministered closed-ended questionnaire was used to collect the quantitative data. For the
qualitative components, semi-structured interview and naturalistic [unstructured] field
observation was conducted. Analysis was done using SPSS version 20 by doing descriptive
statistics like frequency, percentage and crosstab the researcher analyzed quantitative data and
thematicexplanation also used to analyze qualitative data of interview and field observation.
Chi-square was utilized to show the relation of factors with female students. Significance value
of goodness fit test was considered by p-value<0.05. Before administeringtheinstrument, the
researcher checked the validity by inviting experts and pilot study was conducted to check
reliability of the instrument.Cronbach alpha coefficients of reliability for the variables indicate
that high internal-consistency reliability.The study proved that there aresomebarriers that affect
female students’ participation in learning practical activities of physical education, such as; Age,
Negative attitude of female students, Gender bias,Negative attitude of the society towards the
subject matter, Female students interaction with PE teachers, and Socio-cultural factors.
Compared to other studies conducted recently in and out of Ethiopia, there is similarity in the
findings of the study. With respect to identified barriers that restrict female students from
practical participation of physical education,more focus should be given for >/=19yrs female
students during practical activities of PE to assure equal benefit from sport among all age
group.Facilitating sport equipment and other related materials in the school compound which
make the environment attractive and motivate females to participate in practical activities of
PE. In coordination with social work organization, providing counseling and guidance service to
the society. Providing capacity building training for physical education teachers concerning
support and motivation and creating good interaction with female students in teaching learning
process of physical education was recommended.
