Abstract:
The study deals with traditional conflict resolution mechanisms for peace building among Gamo
people in the southern nation nationalities and peoples‟ region. The general objective of the
study was to examine the role of traditional conflict resolution mechanism for peace building
among the Gamo people of Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples‟ Region. The study used
a descriptive research design supported by a qualitative research approach to achieve its goal.
The findings of this study revealed that traditional dispute resolution of Gamo people in addition
to building sustainable peace in the community, resolves conflict in economic and efficient
manner. Furthermore, it promotes the cultural heritage of the Gamo People. In the study area,
traditional conflict resolution mechanisms primarily based on sincere forgiveness and are
resolved in a way that does not create enmity and guarantees lasting peace. Limitation of
documentation and recoding of customary rule, unfavorable religious view towards traditional
dispute resolution practice, modernity and lack of legal recognition remains the major
existential challenges of the practice. In order to promote conflict management practice,
government organs have to develop curriculum in educational institutions, policy should be
developed at national level, cultural awareness campaigns and further researches should be conducted on the area
