The study was attempt to investigate the EFL teachers’ attitude to, practice of and challenges
faced in communicative language teaching approach: Konso zone secondary schools in focus.
To attain the objective of the study, the researcher used survey descriptive research design. Also
to get the appropriate data the researcher use questionnaire, classroom observation and
interview as the instruments of data collection. The researcher took 33 teachers for
questionnaire, nine teachers for classroom observation and five for interview. The researcher
used comprehensive sampling technique to select population. In analyzing the data, the study
used both quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods. That is descriptive statistics and
narrative analysis methods were employed to analyze data carefully. The study discussed and
analyzed results of EFL teachers’ attitude to, practice of and challenges faced in communicative
language teaching approach: Konso zone secondary schools in focus. The finding reveals that
majority of the respondents have a positive attitude towards CLT approach. Teachers have
positive attitude but while practicing they were not applying it in actual TEFL communicative
class. Finally, when they were applying CLT the challenges they faced includes shortage of time
to implement CLT, overcrowded number of students in each class, mother tongue interference,
lack of authentic teaching materials, students poor background knowledge of English language,
fear of students to make a mistake in communicative activities, students less participation were
the major challenges that affect CLT approach. Based on the above finding the researchers
recommended that the Konso education department and woreda education offices have to aware
teachers, give continuous training for teachers to motivate and apply the CLT approach in
actual classroom and it also need further study on large area to check the problem |
