The purpose of this study was to investigate challenges that teachers and students face
in teaching and learning Gaammoththo language in secondary schools of Arbaminch
and Chencha Town Adminstration in Gamo Zone. The study used a mixed method
approach in which both quantitative and qualitative research designs employed. In the
quantitative design, survey questionnaires were employed. Accordingly, 350 students,
36 teachers and 6 education experts were randomly selected, 8 vice principals and 4
supervisors were selected by using purposive method. These quantitative data had
analyzed through the SPSS software and responses were analyzed using the
percentages, frequency, mean and standard deviation. Qualitative data obtained
through interviews and observations were analyzed using thematic approaches. The
findings of the study proved that shortage of teaching and learning resources, less
attitude of students, teachers guide, reference books, were the challenges teacher were
facing in classroom. The study also indicated that some teachers did not effectively
perform what expected from them, significant efforts was not made by concerned
bodies like Town Administration Education Office and the schools to provide
sufficient textbooks and teacher's guides. The findings also approved that the efforts
made by the concerned bodies were not effective and did not bring relevant change
on challenges that teachers were facing. It recommended that the concerned bodies
like town administration education office in collaboration with other stakeholders
should provide sufficient textbooks to teachers and students. Adequate teacher's
guides should supply to teachers. Popular awareness raising activities and
mobilization of the communities should carry out to involve all the communities. |
