Abstract:
Urban areas in every country are characterized by a multitude of activities that contribute to
the growing allure and traffic congestion on a daily basis.Wolaita Sodo, in particular, is
burdened with a significant number of vehicles congesting and How to determine the capacity,
degree of saturation, queue length and delay at selected of signalized intersection under mixed
traffic conditions the signalized intersections. To address this problem, a comprehensive Pillot
survey was conducted to identify the signalized intersections in the town that are experiencing
substantial delays. These signalized intersections were determined to be the busiest, with high
traffic volumes and significant delays at each intersection. The objective of this study is to
evaluate the performance of signalized selected intersections. To achieve this, traffic approach
volume, traffic delay, and saturated flow rates were collected using the Video graphic method.
Data collection took place over a 10-hour period, with measurements taken at 15-minute
intervals at each intersection. The road width and Queue Length measured using a tape meter.
The traffic data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel and MATLAB software, with the aim of
obtaining results based on the provided inputs and the collected traffic data. The saturation
flow and traffic delay were modeled using a supervised learning based artificial neural
network (ANN) algorithm. This model considered various factors such as arrival rate, queue
length, road width, and cycle time. To improve the traffic flow, Webster's method was employed
to redesign the traffic signals at each intersection along the selected signalized intersection.
The three intersections were serving in poor condition of level of service F, the average traffic
delay at 21mazoria 69.25, at Ajip intersection 71.37, and at Bus Station 62.56 sec/veh.The
intersection capacity 21mazoria 3990,the Ajip intersection 6518 and Bus Station intersection
5468 PCU/hr. Consequently, new signal settings were obtained and the following results were
obtained the mazoria 21 phase I 33.01%, phase II 30.69%, phase III 38.67% and phase IV
32.67% average traffic delay reduced, the Ajip intersection phase I 43.56%, phase II 46.66%,
phase III 40.59% and phase IV 53.33% average traffic delay reduced, the Bus Station
intersection phase I 36.84%, phase II 45.83 and phase III 49.12% average traffic delay
reduced. The Mazoria 21 intersection 22.80%, the Ajip intersection 32.40% and the Bus
Station 46.23% increased the saturation flow rate and the intersection capacity
