This study was aimed at assessing the challenges and opportunities of vulnerable orphans in attending their education in primary schools of Arba Minch Town. To conduct the study, key informants who were believed to give rich information were purposively selected. Qualitative research method specifically case study approach was employed with thematic data analysis. The sample size consisted of five vulnerable orphans, two school principals, two home room teachers, two parents, one SNIE expert and one social affairs expert. Document analysis, semi-structured interview, focus group discussion and observation were employed as data gathering tools. Results of the study showed that, vulnerable orphans are challenged to attend their education in their school age. Lack of care giver, lack of support like educational materials, lack of sufficient food at home, and lack of appropriate shelter to live are problems which hinder their regular attendance in the school. As many of them live with nearby relatives, work load, negligence and disrespect to the educational needs of vulnerable orphans are also among the challenges they face. As a result, feeling of hopelessness puts negative energy in their education. Beside the challenges, free registration, inconsistent support from religious institution, additional tutorials and free health coverage contributed for the education of vulnerable orphans. It is concluded that vulnerable orphan’s education is seriously deteriorated in the study area. Lastly, awareness raising, early identification, ensuring fairness while recruiting and supporting, mobilizing resources towards activities like school feeding were forwarded as the major recommendation of the study. |
