This study aimed to assess roles and powers of women in household decision-making; in case of Kamba Zuriya Woreda, Gamo Zone, Ethiopia. To achieve this main objective, descriptive survey design was used. The research approach engaged here was both quantitative and qualitative. The numbers of a representative sample are 202 that were selected by simple random sampling technique. The key informants for the interviewing were selected purposively since they do have a locally customized trend of knowledge. Primary and secondary data sources were the main data sources to achieve the study objective using data collection instruments such as questionnaire, interview and written documents. Moreover, the focus group discussion was also engaged to obtain the generalized view of discussants. The data obtained were analyzed through descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage. Study findings revealed that however there are different challenges, the role of women in household decision-making activities in the study area shows hopeful progress and in encouraging way. Based on results and discussions there are challenges which affect women role in household decision-making in the study area are traditional cultures and social norms, lack of interest of women for decision-making, women counterpart influence, religious discrimination of women, educational background of women, economic status or property possession of women, the self-confidence of women for decision-making, women role model, and living condition of the society. Significance of women role in the household decision-making of the study area is promoting economic growth, achieving food safety, promoting effectiveness and reducing poverty, and helping future generation by promoting sustainable development. This study proposed recommendations to address the gaps of women role in household decision-making and initiate their participation. Respecting their participation and encouraging them for a further result is necessary for their counterparts, societal and other stakeholder bodies. The equal participation of women in household decision-making with men is essential to the achievement of equality in the community and at the country level. It is base for peace and security, for overcoming poverty, for sustainable development and so on. Thus all of us must support women participation in decision-making at the household level and out of the house by evaluating their need |
