Abstract:
This study was to assess rural-urban migration and urban housing problems in Sodo town, SNNPR, Ethiopia. More specifically, the study attempted to examine the current status of urban housing problems, to identify push and pull factors of migration in study area, to measure the most exposed groups of people regarding migration and to assess the institutional constraints of urban housing in the study area. To attain these objectives, the study employed both primary and secondary sources of data. The primary data collected through field observation, interview and FGD used for qualitative data, while questionnaires with 172 migrants from eight sample kebele were used to extract quantitative data and analyzed by descriptive statistics such as percentages, pie-charts and bar graphs. Moreover, from inferential statistics binary logistic regression and chi square were employed through SPSS version 20 to enter the data for computer analysis. The findings of this study revealed that migrants in Sodo town faced urban housing shortage due to high demand of housing by rural urban migration which accounted 40.1%. Thus, 61.6% of migrants did not have their own houses and they were faced acute shortage of housing by overcrowding of migrant population. On the other hand, unemployment and shortage of agricultural land were the major rural push factors that embraced 71.5%. With regard toage and sex structure; young and women were most mobile by 69.2%. Among institutional constraints, poor implementation of housing plan embraced 70.9 percent. Moreover, it is important to design income based and fair housing programs. Housing institution should give priority in allocation of housing budget through wise management and active participation of community, private enterprises, and NGO’s particularly in affordable housing packages and recognize rural centered developmentstrategies to minimize urban in-migration in study area
