Resettlement programme is considered as one of the development strategy in Ethiopia
indifferent regimes. This study focused on state sponsored resettlement. The purpose of the
study was to assess the effect of resettlement on the livelihood of the settling households in
Sibu Sire Woreda .To achieve the objective of the study data wascollected frombothprimary
and secondary sources.Mixed method approach that combines both quantitative and
qualitative data was used in this study. The qualitative research approach was used to
analyze data that was collected using the unstructured interviews with key informants. A total
of 171 sample respondents wereselected using simple random sampling technique. Both
descriptive and inferential data analysis techniques were used in this study. Firstly,
descriptive statistical procedures including, frequency distributions, percentages, arithmetic
means, line and bar graphs, etc were used. Secondly, inferential statistical analysis, namely
the paired sample t test wasused. The findings of this study reveal that the effects of planned
resettlement on the livelihood of resettlers were mixed as a success or a failure.Improved
landholding,food security and improvement of income were the major successof resettlement
in the study area whereaslack of infrastructures such as roads and basic social services such
as education and health sevice were the major failure of resettlement in study area . Finally,
the researcher recommends that: There should be a need of support from donors, local and
international NGOs and the privatesectors,There is need for the money lending institutions to
help the settlers to have access loan,and the area management in conjunction with other
responsible ministries needs to improve physical infrastructure in the area . |
