dc.description.abstract ABSTRACT Background – Childbirth is a phase of great transition for a woman life. Maternal role competence is a mother’s skills and satisfaction in the care of her infant. Mothers who have high perceived maternal role competence are able to make a successful transition to motherhood and gain mastery in their maternal role performance. It has been not adequately investigated this period of time beyond physiologic and pathologic aspect, especially in developing countries including Ethiopia. Objective -To assess the magnitude of maternal role competence and its associated factors among mothers who attended immunization clinic, at Public Health facilities of Arba Minch town southern Ethiopia, 2019. Method- facility based cross sectional study design was used. Sample of 389 mothers selected from EPI clinic of public health facilities in Arba Minch town, southern Ethiopia from February to March 20, 2019. The data were coded and entered into Epi data version 4.4.4.2 and exported into SPSS Version 25 software used for analysis. A structured and pretested questionnaire was used to collect the data. Binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to see the presence of association between each independent variables and the outcome variable. All variables with p value less than 0.25 were entered into multivariable logistic regression model. Adjusted Odds ratio along with 95%Confidence interval was estimated to measure the strength of the association. Finally, statistical significance was declared at p-value <0.05. Result-The magnitude of poor maternal role competence were 39.6% (95% CI; 37%, 41%). Low selfesteem (AOR; 5.518; 95%: 1.669, 13.109), Not having child care experience (AOR; 2.948:95%: 1.682, 5.167), low and moderate social support(AOR:2.05;95%:1.219,3.44), (AOR;3.598;95%;1.864,6.946) respectively severe and moderate postpartum depression symptom (AOR:4.72;95%:1.699,13.109) and (AOR;4.109;1.676,10.072) respectively were predictors of maternal role competence. Conclusion and recommendation–many mothers were found to be poor in maternal role, self-esteem, social support, postpartum depression and child care experience were factors significantly associated with maternal role competency. Special concern and adequate support should be given to mothers, during antenatal and postnatal care by all concerned body and also family member en_US
