dc.description.abstract This project work investigates the index properties of a soil at Lante Keble near to Lake Abaya. Laboratory works considers of Natural moisture content (NMC) test, Atterberg’s limit test, sieve analysis and specific gravity, compaction test and free swell test. The soil found in lante kebele near to Lake Abaya has liquid limit at the range of 33.38 – 58.9% and plastic limit in the range of 15.48 – 41.18% and plastic index 4.698-27.2%, this reveals that the soil is medium plastic and specific gravity determination has between the range of 2.64 and 2.69. Then according to ASTM D 854-83 the soil is sandy soil and also the average moisture content of soil found in lante kebele near to Leake Abaya is range between 19.51-37.76%and also the optimum moisture content of soil found in lante kebele near to Lake Abaya is range between 19.2-25.11%,maximum dry density of soil found in lante kebele near to Lake Abaya is range between 1.26-1.58g/cm3 then finally all the result obtained from investigation shows, that the soil found in lante kebele near to Lake Abaya is safe for first phase of any construction structure. The free swell index obtain from the investigation of lante kebele near to Lake Abaya is the range between 23-35%. en_US
